The Introduction to Health and Safety at Work training course has been awarded the Certificate of Quality and Merit of the Royal Institute of Public Health.

Having completed this course you should be able to commit yourself to creating and maintaining effective health and safety procedures within the workplace.

All too often, staff find it difficult to understand why they should see health and safety as an important issue. Unfortunately, it is often only when an accident occurs that minds are concentrated and action is taken. This course draws on Health and Safety Executive statistics to underline the very real risks that exist in what appear to be the safest of working environments. It also underlines the need to take health and safety seriously by making you aware of your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. By addressing your attitude to health and safety, and discussing in overview the type of risks you face, the course will help you to address health and safety as a real workplace issue.

The Health and Safety at Work Act lays down very clear responsibilities on all employers for health and safety in the workplace. Compliance with these requirements is, however, difficult if staff are not committed to working with their employer, as well as meeting their own responsibilities under the Act. This course, and the others in the series, will provide essential support for organisations wishing to work with their staff in complying with health and safety law.

The course is divided into 6 sections covering the following areas:

  • why health and safety is a key issue for both employers and employees
  • accident statistics
  • the legal situation
  • an overview of job, environmental and attitudinal risks to health and safety
  • taking action in the event of an accident
  • getting help and advice on health and safety matters
